A koala is kind and gentle and is sometimes called koala bear. But, koala is not a bear. This creature belongs to a group of mammals called marsupials. Animals that belong in that group include kangaroos and opossums. Koalas spend most of their lives in the eucalyptus trees and feeding its leaves. But koalas must be careful when eating young leaves from the eucalyptus trees. It contains an acid that can be poisonous. Koalas raise their young in a pouch on the underside of the mother’s belly like a kangaroo and other marsupials. A male koala can weigh up to 30 pounds when it is fully grown and the female koala can weigh up to 20.
