Is it me or does a Spaniard's stare stick to you like glue. When I was in Madrid, I couldn't help be bothered by the attention. I'm already shy enough.!
In every occasion I went out, I'd pass by men, who'd stop and turn back as I continued my way. Sometimes it'd just get creepy. Like the one time I rested my back against this theater building, coughing a bit of icy air. To my knowledge, I was alone managing the winter. I half turn to the side and realize some guy's standing not too far away. "Don't be so uptight, he's probably just waiting for a friend, he'll leave soon.," I reassured myself. An hour later...no one arrives. There was a point where we both met eye to eye. Finally, I hurried off to a cafe. Inside the cafe, I observed the guy from afar. He left as well. Luckily he didn't walk in the cafe.
It was a random weird incident.
Here's another puzzling one. I was starving since I had no clue restaurants closed early. A semi-packed bar enticed me. I ordered something in my fuc^ed up accent. The waiter, who appeared to look 40ish, would not bloody stop staring at me. Did I have a enormous booger sliding down my nose? WTF. And he kept making restroom trips. I don't even wanta know why. It got to the point where eating was a pain in the ***.
The tour guide I traveled along with, definitely had a thing for me. I won't rule that out as creepy. Maybe a useless/frustrated thing, since I was under aged at the time (17); he was about 33. Long distance relationship with a minor isn't the most convenient. Strangely enough, I made a move on him. The thing is I admired the guy's intelligence/charm. I gave him my info...stupidly one of my rings too. He never called probably due to an injured ego from not responding to his sweet talk. In fact I remember him making some nasty remarks when I stayed quiet. (take yourself off books for once) Or his idiotic remark at the perfume shop. "Is that cologne for me?"
Go figure...Spanish men.
Geez, the bus driver, another freak. Was bold enough to ask me to "message him in his hotel room." I literarily was speechless. Its a tour bus/ packed with tourists, not a damn brothel.
What I don't understand is, why so much attention?
I gave the Spanish men no provocation whatsoever.
Am I missing something culturally? (I come from Persian/french decent)
And why did the tour guide act like a jerk?
The ways of Spanish men?
The people who've responded to this are either (1) Self-absorbed with themselves and whores desparate for male attention and see no problem with men looking (SLUTS) or (2) Have never been exposed to this and think you are exaggerating..
I live in Los Angeles and OMFG let me tell you.. I have to take the bus ok and L.A. is like 50% hispanic.. on the bus 95%.. now my husband is Mexican but he's about the only Mexican I've met that ISN'T like this.. He has to come with me on the bus now because it ******* drives me crazy. Now I dress with big hoodies now and I NEVER wear makeup not a day in my life. This men look no matter what and not just look but stare. I think it is mostly about power. I am 20 and they are what like 50? It's disgusting. I'm getting so tired of it. The sad thing is most girls are ******* sluts and enjoy this. And they make the guys think its OK to do this. Even once going to my husband's cousins birthday party.. there was a man staying with them.. and when my husband went inside to go to the bathroom he was following me around.. and looking at the little girls at the party who were like 10 years old. And later he came to check if my husband was with me (thank god he was) and left all quickly.
Well, just know that you aren't alone, you aren't crazy, you are not being self absorbed. You are right and those men are wrong. Most girls just let it happen which is stupid and sickening.
Reply:wow . with all the beauty Madrid as to offer and yet it was you every one could not take there eyes off of. if you would of stayed a few days longer I'm sure they would of made a statue for all those that missed getting to see you..
Reply:omg
Reply:You must live in suburban America?
I live in NYC, its 50% Hispanic here. Spanish Men are like that everywhere, they have been starring and hitting on me since I was about 11 yrs old, they are known to like young girls/women, No I never wore makeup or looked older- still dont.
If they see a pretty girl they will go "pssst psst psst"(the cat call), or they will say "Gelenda"(means beautiful), or say "Mommy".lol
Over here they will stare and make cat calls to every young pretty woman. Its best to look ahead and ignore them.
Its part of their culture done be offended. In my experience their not dangerous or out to harm, their just obsessed with women and sex.
If you find a hot latin man, go for it, they do make great lovers :)
Reply:So you didn't provoke any of them not even the one you gave his number too...sure! Intelligence...hahahaha that's a good one!
The tour guide probably didn't call you probably because YOU are immature. Not because of his comment of "is that cologne for me?" That is a cutsie gesture of a man (retarded, yes) but I understand it maybe because I am older and wiser.
Everywhere I go I get stared down out not necessarily by Spanish men, White, African American...etc.
So don't go there you, in my opinion, are too full of yourself. Everything is someone else's fault. You think the world revolves around you and hun it doesn't. Men are men wherever you are...they always stare!
Reply:How far exactly are you from 'full of crap"?
Reply:Well, it might not be as cut and dry as it seems when reading your question. It could be a number of things. I cannot tell whether you are male or female, and you did not say. Both ways, it could bring about attention from interested bystanders. Some Spaniards are up to no good and try to take advantage of every situation like they did at the last olympic that was held there. Do keep in mind, you cannot be altogether sure that you were not given out covert messages.
Again, you gave us lots of information but not enough to go on. We do know that Spaniards are probably no different than any others on the planet. Take it as a compliment, and keep yourself out of harms way.
Reply:It was probably your clothing. Not the same style that they are used to. The Italians are the same, if you have something on they don't consider totally "in style" and of the best quality they deem it their privilege to stare you into shame. Just a cultural thing, for the most part both nations are still Second World, so let it go.
Reply:The only spanish men I've ever met were priests, lol, when I worked in Rome last year for nine weeks. I can't say they did much staring or sticking, but they were very amusing and had some wonderful turns of phrase in their english translations.
One was a long tall, 'el greco' type, very austere looking but sweet as anything, the other two were almost like identical twins except they were not identical and not twins, but they were so alike. They seemed a little stand-offish actually until I was able to assist them with something, then they were ever after so friendly and nice!
So, that's my entire experience. Yours sounds very dramatic. I thought your question was part of a book you were writing at first, it had a kind of prose language feel, very interesting and kept me reading on.
Cheers :-)
Reply:Today, a lot of girls start wearing make up very young and dressing in ways that are sometimes provocative to say the least. Not to say you were, but you might evaluate yourself and see if there were things that made you appear older. Perhaps they were attracted to you and assumed you to be a lot older. Generally speaking, Men of Italian and Spanish decent treat a woman like a queen. They tend to be very attentive. But unwanted attention isn't OK.
