Yes, I am going to the vet tomorrow...
My cat Shadow has ALWAYS had a "teary" eye. Just one. The vet said it was OK and "normal".
Now she has a thick yellowish discharge along with the excessive watering in her eye.
I gave her a dose of "Antibiotic Eye Cream" called "Erythromycin Opthamalic Ointment" .
It seems to me it made her eye worse!
Is that possible??
She had a URI over the winter (she got it 2 weeks AFTER she got ALL of her vaccinations, including the one for URI's) It took STRONG antibiotics to "cure" her.
Has anyone ever had this eye issue with their cat?
What did you do besides going to the vet (which I AM DOING tomorrow) to comfort her eye untill the appointment tomorrow?
Thanks in advance...
I hope she does not have another URI, I hope it is a simple thing. I hate it when she feels sick. She is a sweet baby..
How would you do it?
It sounds like to me that she is has an eye infection. Honestly it won't harm her any unless you leave it untreated. I have a cat that has teary eye ducts and he gets greenish/yellowish stuff in his eye from time to time i just wipe it away with a warm damp wash cloth.. having the goo in her eye might be irritating it more.. I would suggest waiting before you give her any more medication that was not prescribed for this exact incident. Its like taking prozac when you aren't depressed... It'll mess with your brain. Good luck! I'll pray for your kitty!
Reply:Has she used the medication before with no problem? It's possible that she is having an allergic reaction to the medication. Yellowish or greenish discharge usually is a sign of infection.
I would stop using the medication until she's seen tomorrow. Until then, you can use some moisten cotton balls (moistened with warm tap water) to help soothe the eye and get some of the discharge off and keep it from crusting.
Reply:talk to your vet about the possibilty of feline herpes.
a lot of vets don't know much about it. the symptoms sound very much like feline herpes.
go to walmart supplment isle and get l-lysine give your cat 500-1000mg. you can't give it too much all it is is an amenio acid that helps keep the herpes virus from replicating. ask your vet to give you Azithromycin as the antibiotic. also 12.5mg of benadryl twice a day will help as well.
Good luck
Reply:i think cats have crap on the side of their eyes just like we do in the mornings, puting stuff in his eyes might make it worse unless the doctor prescribes it.
Reply:I use a cotton ball soaked in warm water to clean out the eye. Sometimes when mine gets around pollen, she will tear up and it will actually bleed a little. She has allergies and I have to keep her away from dust and pollen. I clean with warm water and a cotton ball. She hates me for it, but after it is clean she seems pretty happy that it is.
Reply:I would suggest calling your vet and explaining what's happening, and asking if you should stop or continue the medicine until your appointment tomorrow.

"What is causing my cat's weepy eye?"

Reply:I'm familiar w/terramycin eye ointment for cats so guess this is the same or similar %26amp; in my experiences it sometimes does irritate the eye %26amp; make it worse, but sometimes it works well. She may just need a different type of eye med %26amp; probably some antibiotics as it sounds like its a respiratory infection now, not just the chronic tearing. Some cats have a little eye injury that causes tearing in one eye, or a bit of a nasal problem, but sometimes they have a chronic herpes virus %26amp; one or both eyes will tear off %26amp; on; if herpes, sometimes adding some powdered lysine into their food will help keep it under control. Tell your vet about using the erythromycin %26amp; ask about lysine use - its inexpensive %26amp; available at drugstores %26amp; healthfood stores. I volunteer w/cat rescue %26amp; we use it all the time in the cats food for cats kept at the pet store, as herpes sometimes reoccurs when cats are under stress, %26amp; being caged at the store is stressful for them. Hope that helps. Make sure kitty drinks plenty of water %26amp; canned food while sick, so she doesn't get dehydrated, as that might contribute to a urinary infection if she's prone to them. Good luck.
