PLEASE ANSWER! (10 points for the first good answer!)?

i have had my male winter white dwarf hamster for 2 weeks and one day. i know that is not a long time, but he should at least be used to me. I hold him quite often and i hand feed him a lot, so he gets used to my hand. i let him watch me feed him. He is only 9 weeks old. today i wanted to get him out and he ran into a corner and when i tried to get him, he hissed and bit my finger so hard it made it bleed. i disinfected it and washed the cut out, but i just don't understand. why does he run away when he knows i am not going to hurt him. i also have a male syrian and he is very sweet and loves me. so i have experience with hamsters. is there any way i can prevent being bitten again, or does he just need more time to get used to me?

PLEASE ANSWER! (10 points for the first good answer!)?
he was probably scared at the time... i had 2 hamsters for two years, one was the swetest, and the other one bit me every time i took him out of the cage.

i dont know, really.

if you grabbed him while he was eating, thats probably why!!!

if you want to prevent it, use gardener gloves every time you take him out for a week, if he bites the glove, it meand he just likes to bite whatever is in his way ;0 plz choose me as best ansewr!!!! i really need it to get to level 2
Reply:he probably just needs more time... he could be shy.... just his personality
Reply:Pets are just like as...Different personalities, different habits, different feelings...I think that your hamster needs more time to use you...or it had been frightened for something he saw....Also,it may be a bit nervous that day!

I can't decide which goes most...As I said they are like humans and you never know what is going on their mind...!
Reply:remember that they are nocturnal animals and that its not good for them to be taken out during the day. next time he lets you hold him, give him a really good treat and just pet himbetween the ears and then put him back. you should repeat this process like 3 times a week. you have to gain his trust again, remember he is only a baby. he misses his mom.
Reply:i have had hamsters my whole life, and unfortunately some are just nicer than others. maybe if you just hold your hand in the cage without trying to touch him will help. it sounds like your doing everything right. he could just be frightened. maybe whoever had him first (pet store, home owner etc) was rough with him. give him a little more time, and keep trying to hold and feed him. good luck :)
Reply:maybe if you smell like a predator or something that may harm him in his natural insticts he will bite ... try getting some spray from a pet shop.... i have seen some.... and i would say he would need more time.
Reply:wear gloves
Reply:dwarf hamsters are naturally like that they always bite people my aunt had a few she hated them they always used to bite her just keep away from it thanx for not hurting him SAVE THE ANIMALS
Reply:He might just not like people. If that's the case he'll probably eventually get used to you, but you've probably got to give it more time. Sometimes it takes longer for different hamsters. Good luck! :]
Reply:You need to let him get used to being outside his cage, he was scared because he was in a different environment, so he was trying to hide and protect himself.

Make a small wall out of books around his cage and let him get used to that area gradually extend it and he will get used to being out!
Reply:mabe you had a food smell on your finger i also have an white dwarf hamster and when i pick him up i rub my hand on sawdust to get rid of any food smell that may make him bite but sounds realy wierd

hope this helped
Reply:yeah, give him some time. he may still needsome getting use to you.
Reply:Keep feeding him for at least anouther month and don't shout around him (brothers and sisters are hard)thengo slow and try to make him feel safe (10 hamsters love them!)
Reply:It think he way just need to get used to you. I had a hamster once, and it took a year for her to get used to me. Some hamsters have different personalities, like people. Some trust others really easily, and others just need some time. I'm sure the hamster is just scared, but is on his way to trusting you. My hamster used to do the exact same thing, but she came around.

I hope I helped! Oh, and sometimes holding it a lot can add stress to the hamster. If you wake it up while its sleeping, then its strees level can go way up.

And i just remembered something else. Your hamster might have smelled food on your finger, and thats why he bit you. email me for more info
Reply:You should try to give him more time to get used to you..And if he still acts nasty towards you like he doesnt know you then you should protect your hands while handeling him (gloves) I know they sell them for birds so they dont bite your hands..Maybe hes not used to the other hamster you have. Im sure he will start to get used to you in a couple more weeks! Hope it works out for you !
Reply:one of two things just terrified and doesnt like to be touched or if you have both hamsters in same cage, could be that the older one is terrorizing the little one best thing to do is to watch them interact with one another and then go from there .good luck
Reply:Give him time. But he may never get to the point you want. maybe he smells the other one on you and doesn't like it.since both are male.
Reply:maybe he is jealouse of you and the other hamster
Reply:More time I would think. At 9 weeks old he is still an infant and may miss mom or was (for a lack of better terms)the ugly duckling of his siblings and mistreated by them. or whom ever you got him from mistreated him (just a thought).

Hope he warms up to you soon!

to avoid getting bit any animal if cornered feels threatened and will defend themselves.
Reply:poo
Reply:Oh my gosh, same thing happened to me. You just gotta let your little buddy get familiarized. He's scared of the unknown. Let time do its job. =D
Reply:Just give him more time...
Reply:alright maybe you were too agressive going to get him and that caused him to run
Reply:He probably still needs time to adjust. My sister's first hamster (we named him Kuzco) was very friendly, easy-going, and adjusted to us in about 2 months. But the 2nd hamster (we named her Puff) was vicious. She didn't bond with anyone except my sister, and that was only after about 6 months, and even then she'd try to bite her sometimes. So every hamster is different. Good luck and best wishes to you and your pets in the new year! From Laura...
Reply:try not to hut him please.he dose love you and are used to you maby you shude give him more freedome get him a hamster ball and put him outside :).....thats what i do he loves it ..take my edvise

Reply:well i know from experience.you have to give time.and just keep doing what you were doing.dont push things to fast.

good luck
Reply:Hamster are very territorial. What happened was he knows that the cage you keep him in is yours AND his territory. When you leet him into the corner, he may have claimed it as his own and gotten territorial on you. Or, when hamsters are released into a big space, they get very excited and he may have freaked on you. Don't take it personally. For every new space that Hamsters are released into is like you moving into a new house. You might get kind of freaked out if you walked into the next room and it was a giant mansion with your mom in it but 30 feet tall. I would. He is was just a little freaked. He just needs to get used to being outside the cage. I suggest taking him out once a week and let him get used to the space slowly. When you do that, perhaps wait until he falls asleep to pick him up. Or approach very gently and quietly and talk to him nurturingly. It isn't you, it's the hamster. You sound like a very good hamster owner! Most kids will take the hamster home and squeeze him to death. Good Luck and enjoy your new family member!
Reply:try not to squeeze too hard on him that makes them irritated. here, check out these cool websites:

Reply:He just wants to be free and roam around out of his cage, he didn't mean to hurt you, but do you know how it feels to be stuck in one of those things?
