Dealing with unfriendly snobbish neighbor? Is it my fears or hers??

OK, so... I've been living in this quiet neighborhood for about 10 years... and I've always felt it was important to get along with my neighbors, at least the ones right next door, at least common courtesy.

I get along great with my neighbors to the east. But the next-door ones to the west... well, here's the situation: I have a daughter, they have kids just a little younger than my daughter - sweet kids. The husband seems really nice and even snow-blows part of our driveway in winter. But the wife seems odd, warm one day and cold (most of) the other days. I thought for a while she was only saying hello to me in the neighborhood, and not elsewhere like schoolyard (but idk). She refused to try to save gas by walking/carpooling with us. She once lectured me about child safety, and if she had let me get a word in edgewise, she'd have realized that I knew the same things! Her kids seem scared of me. I'd like to get along. advice??

PS- its not like she's shy, she's on PTA/sells toys!

you have no idea what her life is...her husband has done you favors..leave her alone..be polite to the children..it is true about not knowing...till you walk in someone elses shoes
Reply:It sounds like she is mentally imbalanced. She has every right to not want to carpool, but why is she telling the kids to be scared of you? I say just keep your distance. Keep being friends with the husband though. He probably knows his wife is nuts and has many conversations where she says something is wrong with you, and he says "Dear, there is nothing wrong with the neighbors. They are nice people."
Reply:Maybe she doesn't agree with your parenting skills. Maybe she thinks you are to loose. Maybe she just doesn't have time to invest in chitchat, but I would go with she is fearful for her kids safety and doesn't trust people.
Reply:Don't take it so personally. Some people don't have time for much else when they're plate is full. And I too would be worried about soemone else driving my children to school. Actually, I like to be there when I drop off or pick up.
Reply:Invite them all over for a bbq.
Reply:People choose their friends.
